Unmasking the "Ex-Gay"
Myth
The Truth Gay Conversion Therapies
by Harley Berger, Vice-President
"Ex-Gay" ministries and other practitioners of
sexual conversion (a.k.a. Reparative) therapies promote the belief that
all homosexuality is a result of a person’s suffering a broken gender
identity and/or a stunted, stuck sexual development that’s gone bad.
Supporters of these therapies claim to be able to prevent and even "cure"
homosexuality. The repair work is intended to help the afflicted to regain
their innate heterosexuality through a Christian God and/or by convincing
them that their problem is their parents' fault. In their fervor to "fix"
homosexuals, these practitioners have often overlooked or completely
dismissed the possible psychological and social side effects of such
treatments.
Join us on Saturday, June 18 when our guest will be Psychotherapist
Joe Kort. Mr. Kort has been in practice since 1985 and specializes
in Gay Affirmative Psychotherapy, IMAGO Relationship Therapy, sexual
addiction and childhood sexual, physical and emotional abuse, depression
and anxiety. He is also the author of "10
Smart Things Gay Men Can Do To Improve Their Lives".
Mr. Kort's presentation will address the flaws common to ex-gay ministries
and so-called reparative therapies, their success rates as well as the
difference between being homosexual and being gay. |
